Coexistence of surface and cave amphipods in an ecotone environment Naturalis
Luštrik, R.; Turjak, M.; Kralj-Fišer, S.; Fišer, C..
Interspecific interactions between surface and subterranean species may be a key determinant for species distributions. Until now, the existence of competition (including predation) between these groups has not been tested. To assess the coexistence and potential role of interspecific interactions between surface Gammarus fossarum and subterranean Niphargus timavi, and to determine their micro distributions, we conducted a series of field and laboratory observations. We aimed to determine: (1) species substrate preference, (2) whether the presence of G. fossarum influences the habitat choice of N. timavi, and (3) possible predation effects on micro habitat choice of small juveniles. Throughout a small river in SW Slovenia, N. timavi was predominantly found...

Contribution of forest species to the floristic composition of a forested savanna in southeastern Brazil BABT
Pinheiro,Marcelo Henrique Ongaro; Monteiro,Reinaldo.
Based on studies of floristic lists the contribution of forest tree and shrub species in a forested savanna area in the city of Bauru, State of São Paulo, and in 14 different places sheltering cerrado sensu stricto and cerradão in Brazil is defined as the evidence of forest species causing a change of cerrado heterogeneity. The percentages of occurrence of forest species in the locations analyzed varied from zero to 4.5%. The proximity of different forest matrices, the occurrence of fires and the inclusion criteria used were some of the factors that may have influenced such variation.

Drivers of floristic variation in biogeographic transitions: insights from the ecotone between the largest biogeographic domains of South America Acta Botanica
Souza,Loana Araújo Silva; Eisenlohr,Pedro V..
ABSTRACT Ecological transitions usually represent vulnerable ecosystems and high biodiversity. Investigating their drivers is important from both biogeographic and conservationist perspectives. One of these transitions is situated between the two largest biogeographic domains of South America - the Amazon and the Cerrado. We evaluated variation in tree floristic composition throughout this transition and assessed which factors explain this variation. We used 17,240 records of occurrences of 2,530 tree species from the NeotropTree database. We investigated variation in floristic composition using UPGMA cluster analysis with bootstrap resampling and NMDS ordination, and modeled the distribution of species in relation to environmental and spatial predictors...

Dynamics of Forage Production in Pasture-woodlands of the Swiss Jura Mountains under Projected Climate Change Scenarios Ecology and Society
Silvopastoral systems of the Swiss Jura Mountains serve as a traditional source of forage and timber in the subalpine vegetation belt, but their vulnerability to land use and climate change puts their future sustainability at stake. We coupled experimental and modeling approaches to assess the impact of climate change on the pasture-woodland landscape. We drew conclusions on the resistance potential of wooded pastures with different management intensities by sampling along a canopy cover gradient. This gradient spanned from unwooded pastures associated with intensive farming to densely wooded pastures associated with extensive farming. Transplanted mesocosms of these ecosystems placed at warmer and drier conditions provided experimental evidence that...

Ribeiro,Tiago Maciel; Ivanauskas,Natália Macedo; Martins,Sebastião Venâncio; Polisel,Rodrigo Trassi; Santos,Rochelle Lima Ramos dos; Miranda Neto,Aurino.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the floristic composition, richness, and diversity of the upper and lower strata of a stretch of mixed rain forest near the city of Itaberá, in southeastern Brazil. We also investigated the differences between this conservation area and other stretches of mixed rain forest in southern and southeastern Brazil, as well as other nearby forest formations, in terms of their floristic relationships. For our survey of the upper stratum (diameter at breast height [DBH] > 15 cm), we established 50 permanent plots of 10 × 20 m. Within each of those plots, we designated five, randomly located, 1 × 1 m subplots, in order to survey the lower stratum (total height > 30 cm and DBH < 15 cm). In the upper stratum, we...

Phytogeographical patterns of dry forests sensu stricto in northern Minas Gerais State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
ARRUDA,DANIEL M.; FERREIRA-JUNIOR,WALNIR G.; DUQUE-BRASIL,REINALDO; SCHAEFER,CARLOS E.R..
The Deciduous Complex that occurs in northern Minas Gerais State, Brazil, raises questions about the floristic affinities of these formations in relation to neighboring phytogeographical domains. Little is known about the identity of the seasonal forest formations that comprise this complex, or about its relationships to abiotic components, such as soils, topography and climate. This study aimed to recognize the patterns of floristic similarity of all studied fragments of dry forest of northern Minas Gerais with soil and climate attributes, based on the available database. Cluster analysis indicated the existence of two floristic groups that had clear associations with either the Koppen's BSh (semi-arid) or Aw (seasonal tropical) climates. Likewise, the...

REPTILE SPECIES COMPOSITION IN THE MIDDLE GURGUÉIA AND COMPARISON WITH INVENTORIES IN THE EASTERN PARNAÍBA RIVER BASIN, STATE OF PIAUÍ, BRAZIL Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
MADELLA-AURICCHIO,CLÁUDIA RENATA; AURICCHIO,PAULO; SOARES,ENIO SARAIVA.
ABSTRACT The reptile diversity of the Middle Gurguéia River Basin in southern Piauí, Brazil, is little known. The rapid expansion of agriculture in the region is converting the Cerrado and Caatinga into large farming areas, which threatens biodiversity and hastens its loss. In this study, 68 specimens of reptiles from a university collection were examined, comprising 29 species: ten lizards, one amphisbaenian, 15 snakes, two turtles and one crocodilian. They were collected from five locations in the Middle Gurguéia Basin, a region not previously evaluated for reptiles. The most abundant species is a member of Tropidurus. Comparison with eight other areas in the eastern Parnaíba Basin indicated that the diversity of reptiles in the Middle Gurguéia is...

Review of the distribution of Lophostoma carrikeri (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae), with range extension to transitional vegetation zones in the southwestern Amazon Acta Amazonica
BRANDÃO,Marcus V.; PEDROSO,Mônica A.; COLAS-ROSAS,Paul F.; AIRES,Caroline C.; ROCHA,Patrício A. da.
ABSTRACT Lophostoma carrikeri has been mostly recorded within the Amazon biome. There are scarce records in the northern Brazilian Amazon, but also records outside this biome, which were neglected in literature. The aim of this study was to update and extend the distribution of L. carrikeri. Seven new localities in Brazil were provided, including the first records for the states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso, filling a large gap in the species distribution, and three additional records for the state of Pará. Our results reinforce the notion that L. carrikeri is widely distributed in the Amazon, but is also present in other biomes in Brazil, such as Caatinga, Cerrado, and transitional areas.

Seasonal variation in the maximum rate of leaf gas exchange of canopy and understory tree species in an Amazonian semi-deciduous forest Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Sendall,Kerrie M.; Vourlitis,George L.; Lobo,Francisco A..
Leaf gas exchange, water potential, and specific leaf area of two tropical semi-deciduous tree species, Brosimum lactescens S. Moore and Tovomita schomburgkii Planch & Triana, were quantified to establish how these properties were affected by seasonal variations in rainfall and leaf canopy position. The study was conducted at a site near Sinop Mato Grosso, Brazil, which is located within the ecotone of savanna and tropical rain forest. Both species exhibited significant declines in leaf water potential (ΨL), specific leaf area, area- and mass-based light saturated photosynthesis and dark respiration, and maximum stomatal conductance during the dry-season, suggesting that leaf structural properties and gas exchange are significantly altered by...

Species composition and reproductive modes of anurans from a transitional Amazonian forest, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bitar,Youszef O. C.; Pinheiro,Leandra P. C.; Abe,Pedro S.; Santos-Costa,Maria C..
The aim of the present study was to describe the species composition and reproductive modes of an anuran community from a transition area between the Amazonia and Cerrado biomes. Data were collected in habitats exhibiting different degrees of anthropogenic degradation. The community (35 species) identified during the present study presented a larger number of reproductive modes when compared with those from Cerrado communities, but smaller than those of other sites in the Amazon. While all nine modes were recorded in the gallery forests of local rivers and streams, anthropogenic habitats (rubber tree orchards and soybean fields) were occupied only by species adapted to environments where humidity is low, typical of the Cerrado. Overall, the anuran fauna of...

The influence of the conservation status and changes in the rainfall regime on forest-savanna mosaic dynamics in Northern Brazilian Amazonia Acta Amazonica
Couto-Santos,Fabiana R.; Luizão,Flávio J.; Carneiro Filho,Arnaldo.
Coupled carbon/climate models are predicting changes in Amazon carbon and water cycles for the near future, with conversion of forest into savanna-like vegetation. However, empirical data to support these models are still scarce for Amazon. Facing this scenario, we investigated whether conservation status and changes in rainfall regime have influenced the forest-savanna mosaic over 20 years, from 1986 to 2006, in a transitional area in Northern Amazonia. By applying a spectral linear mixture model to a Landsat-5-TM time series, we identified protected savanna enclaves within a strictly protected nature reserve (Maracá Ecological Station - MES) and non-protected forest islands at its outskirts and compared their areas among 1986/1994/2006. The protected...

The role of phytophysiognomies and seasonality on the structure of ground-dwelling anuran (Amphibia) in the Pampa biome, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARAGNO,FRANCIÉLE P.; SANTOS,TIAGO G.; CECHIN,SONIA Z..
ABSTRACTConsidering that habitat use by amphibians is related both with climate and environmental features, we tested the hypothesis that anuran assemblages found in different phytophysiognomies and in different seasons vary in structure. Additionally, we searched for species which can be indicators of habitat and seasons. The study was conducted in the Pampa biome, southern Brazil. Sampling was done through pitfall traps placed in three phytophysiognomies: grassland, ecotone grassland/forest; and forest. The seasonality factor was created by grouping months in warn and cold seasons. Sixteen species were found and the assemblages were influenced both by phytophysiognomies and climatic seasonality. In a paired comparison, the three phytophysiognomies...
